The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) was established in 1991 by Governor's Executive Order to create a single point of contact for the six agencies currently regulating California environmental protection laws. These agencies include: the Air Resources Board, the State Water Resources Control Board and the Regional Water Quality Control Board, the Integrated Waste Management Board, the Department of Toxic Substances Control, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment and the Department of Pesticide Regulation.

The Cal/EPA was established to restore, protect and enhance the environment and to ensure public health, environmental quality and economic vitality for the state of California. The main responsibilities for the Cal/EPA are primarily administrative, with specific focus on budgeting and personnel management reviews, enforcement and information management coordination, and strategic planning and pollution prevention programs.
