The Pershing Project, Bears Ears Site, consisted of 52,800 acres acquired by the Army from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, under a non-exclusive Special Use Permit dated 20 February 1967. The Army used the site as a bivouac area. The site was also known as the Bears Ears Bivouac Area. The Department of Defense (DoD) is not known to have constructed any permanent improvements. The site was relinquished to the Forest Service on 30 April 1967. The site remains part of the Manti-La Sal National Forest, currently serving as a recreation area characterized by primitive campsites and off-road vehicle trails.
