The site was used as a headquarters and post for the military Police Battalion to contruct, maintain and use a railroad crossing. The site is currently owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation and the State of California and is divided into two parcels. The southern parcel is owned by the Bureau and is the site of the Auburn Dam Overlook. The northern parcel, owned by the State of California, is the site of the State Fairgrounds. In the southern parcel, the only remaining Department of Defense-built structure is a former radio communications facility. The structure is currently abandoned and boarded up. The southern parcel is also the location of the Department of Defense (DoD) military company headquarters and barracks which were removed by the State of California. In the northern parcel, the only remaining DoD-built structure is a former DoD barracks building and is currently occupied by the Gold Country Museum and located on the State of California Fairgrounds property.
