What are the boundaries of the TCE and POL plumes? Does the contamination affect my neighborhood/home?

The POL plume currently lies only under the NAAS Monterey Peninsula Airport. The TCE plume stretches from the NAAS Monterey Peninsula Airport to the north side of N. Fremont St. Please click here to view a map of the plume boundaries.

Is the water safe to use? Is the soil safe to handle?

The drinking water in the Monterey area is not affected by the groundwater contamination because California-American Water Company (CAL-AM) is the distributor for Monterey County and draw their water from the Carmel Valley and Seaside Aquifers and from the San Clemente and Los Padres Dams and Reservoirs. Residents who are in the area and have sources (like wells) to extract water from the groundwater table have been notified and asked to not pump any groundwater as it might spread the TCE plume within the groundwater table.
Numerous amounts of soil sampling have been conducted and have determined that there is no contamination in the soils and soil gas. These samples were taken on the Monterey Peninsula Airport and within the surrounding neighborhood, including the Casanova Oak-Knoll Community Center park area.
