What is being done to clean
up the contamination at NAAS Monterey?
At the Casanova Oak Knoll Community Park: An
In Situ chemical oxidation treatment process has been installed
in the park and is currently in its initial operating phase. To remedy
the TCE contamination in the groundwater under the park:
- The treatment system extracts groundwater from the TCE plume through
an extraction well and sends the water to carbon canisters for treatment.
- Once through the filters, the treated water is then sent to an equalization
tank.
- Ferric Sulfide is then added (if necessary) to the treated water
at the equalization tank.
- Hydrogen peroxide is added in line and mixed with the treated water.
- The treated water is re-injected up and down gradient of the TCE
plume through re-injection wells.
- The treated water then mixes with naturally occurring iron compounds
in the groundwater table to form hydroxyl radicals and break down
contaminants.
At the Monterey Peninsula Airport: An In Situ
biodegradation treatment system is currently in its initial operating
phase. To remedy the TCE and POL contamination in the groundwater under
the airport:
- The POL-contaminated water is extracted through a well where oxygen
and nutrients (i.e. potassium and nitrogen) are added.
- The treated water is then re-injected into the groundwater table
at the location of the TCE plume under the airport.
- The contaminated groundwater from the POL plume serves as food for
the oxygen and nutrient microbes to stimulate biodegradation within
the TCE plume (co-metabolism).
- Through co-metabolism, both contaminants begin to break down within
the groundwater.
- Water is then extracted from the groundwater table through TCE extraction
wells and filtered through carbon, mixed with peroxide, and re-injected
into the groundwater down gradient of the TCE source area.
